by artist Chong Yao Qing

Chong Yao Qing’s works reflect a period of consolidation and focus developed through mentorship. While Chong has worked across multiple media, this body of work demonstrates a more deliberate engagement with repetition, structure, and process. The Daily Travelling Line paintings and drawings centre on repeated mark-making, allowing Chong to study how variation emerges through sustained attention rather than constant change.

Through guided studio practice, Chong learned to work within defined parameters—limiting scale, palette, and format—so that attention could be directed toward refining technique. The acrylic paintings show increased control of colour application and compositional balance, while the pencil drawings function as studies that reinforce observation and consistency. Together, they demonstrate a clearer relationship between experimentation and discipline.

The turning point in this body of work lies in Chong’s approach to development. Rather than moving quickly between ideas, he has learned to remain with a single visual language long enough for it to evolve. By working on his drawing practice daily, this shift reflects a growing understanding of how artistic growth can occur through repetition and sustained engagement, marking a step toward greater confidence and clarity in his practice.
