This abstract painting evokes the vibrant memory of Singapore’s Boat Quay, juxtaposing the modern skyline of the new CBD with the nostalgic charm of the old riverside, where bumboats once lined the riverbanks. Through his signature broadstrokes applied with rollers, Raymond Lau transforms the waterfront into a dynamic interplay of forms and colors, capturing the energy and movement of the scene rather than precise details. The rich, vibrant palette brings to life the rhythm of the river, the bustle of the quay, and the artist’s personal reminiscence of the space, turning a familiar urban landscape into an expressive meditation on memory, change, and the enduring spirit of the city.

About Raymond Lau
Raymond Lau belongs to a new generation of Singaporean artists who are at the forefront of the city-state’s evolution into a Renaissance City. A vocal and colourful individual, he views painting as a therapeutic process that enables him to find peace and fulfilment. His large body of realist and abstract works thus reveal a gentler, softer side to his outgoing personality. Accolades to his name include the UOB Painting of the Year 1993 and Young Artist Award 2001.
