Zack Ling’s ceramic works reflect a deepening engagement with clay as a material that demands discipline, consistency, and sustained attention. Through mentorship, Zack was encouraged to concentrate on a single functional form—the chawan—allowing him to focus closely on proportion, balance, and surface rather than pursuing constant variation. This approach resulted in a series of glazed bowls, each shaped through careful, repeated making.
Working in sequence enabled Zack to study difference through repetition. Subtle changes in thickness, curvature, and finish became central points of evaluation, sharpening his understanding of how form affects both function and handling. Glazing introduced further complexity, requiring patience and an openness to outcomes shaped by the behaviour of the material itself. Over time, this process fostered greater control and sensitivity in his approach to ceramics.
Presented together, the bowls are best read as a cumulative body of work. Their strength lies not in individual distinction, but in the evidence of learning over time—where consistency, attention, and refinement gradually take hold. The series demonstrates how a structured, mentor-led framework supported Zack in developing a more focused and technically assured ceramic practice.

About Zack Ling
Zack Ling is an artist whose practice centres on close observation, attention to detail, and hands-on making. Working across drawing, animation, and clay, he focuses on translating careful study into precise forms and surfaces. Zack develops his works through repeated practice, refining technique through close reference and sustained focus. His approach values accuracy, structure, and material control, particularly in three-dimensional processes. As he continues to build confidence with ceramics, he is increasingly attentive to form, finish, and process. With aspirations to pursue a career in art, Zack remains committed to developing skill through practice. He is an artist with autism.
